Upcoming Wine Discovery Weekend 2016

Ewineasia is holding the third edition of what’s becoming an annual affair of it’s Wine Discovery Weekend. I had the opportunity to attend the preview and here’s a snapshot on the upcoming activities lined up for local wine enthusiasts.

 

The theme this time is “Discovering The Exceptional Less-Explored”. The plan is for enthusiasts to try wines a little less common, a little beyond the mainstream range. Activities will be held over 3 days (15, 16 and 17 Oct 2016). There’s 3 wine masterclasses, 2 wine dinners, 1 wine brunch and a walkabout tasting arranged to cater to your varied inclinations.

The Walkabout Tasting is on 15th Oct, held at APS Lifestyle Gallery. There’s more than 100 wine labels from over 40 wineries lined up for this event. 18 winemakers and winery representatives are attending this tasting to share with enthusiasts their wines and experiences. Paolo de Marchi from Tuscany (Italy), Celler Pinol from Terra Alta (Spain), Lis Neris from Friuli (Italy) and Agusti Torello Mata from Penedes (Spain) are a few of the representatives you can expect to see during this event.

The topics for the  3 masterclasses look interesting. They are:
a. Pinot Grigio of Friuli and its Rare Back Vintages
b. The Rise of Organic & Biodynamic Wines
c. Fine Wines of Espana

One doesn't often get the opportunity to try back vintages of Pinot Grigio. One question which may be going through your mind is whether Pinot Grigio holds the virtues and potential to warrant keeping and aging. Vintages of Lis Neris Gris 2013, 2011, 2009 and 2007 are lined up for tasting during this masterclass. Now you’ve got an opportunity to find out for yourself. These masterclasses (which comes complimentary) are held during the Walkabout Tasting.

Then there’s the wine meal experiences:

Upcoming consumer wine events (Sep-Oct 2014)

Three interesting wine events are just around the corner for wine consumers residing in Singapore. For those who like to explore and discover what your palate prefers, or taste wines from a particular region and learn a little more, this would be a good opportunity. Those who are presently pursuing wine courses would find this a good time to taste and discover what their manuals and wine books speak of as well. Of course you can rope in a few friends and visit these events for the sole purpose of having a social get together.

29 Sep 2014; 'Discover California Wines' event

This main wine producing region in US has a lot to offer in terms of quality and variety. You'll get an opportunity to taste wines produced from different AVAs within California.

18 Oct 2014; Wine Directions Wine Fair

19 Oct 2014; Wine Family Gathering

Wines brought in by various local wine merchants come together under the 'Wine Family platform' to showcase their liquid wares. One can expect wines from different countries, producers and vintages over here.

23-26 Oct 2014; Wine Fiesta

I think it will be safe to say that this will be the biggest wine consumer event in terms of size for this year. The Straits Wine Company organizes this event. Wine consumers will by now be familiar with the concept as this event has been held in previous years. Just keep in mind that this time round there is a change in venue. It will be held at Clifford Square.

Wine Voyage at Audi Fashion Festival 2013

An upcoming wine event. I think it will be more appropriate to say 'an upcoming wine and gourmet food' event.

The Straits Wine Company, organizer of the 'now annual' Singapore Wine Fiesta, is bringing a wine and food event this time round.

Its held over 5 days and is called 'Wine Voyage at Audi Fashion Festival'. While the 'fashion festival' part will see a series of fashion related activities over the 5 days, the 'Wine Voyage' part strives to bring a wholesome food and wine experience to the visiting public. A good range of wines, attending winery representatives and gourmet delicacies prepared by celebrity chefs have been planned to satiate one's gastronomic leanings.

(entitles ticket holder to one free wine tasting from each fashion capital. Additional wines will be sold at $5 to $10 per glass. Dishes prepared by gourmet chefs are priced from $5 to $20 and are sold on a per consumption basis.)

Organized together with Mercury Marketing & Communications, it showcases wines from around the world and gourmet food from fashion capitals like Berlin, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Sydney and Singapore. Food will be prepared by chefs from Deliciae Hospitality Management and My Private Chefs, and will include tapas and canapes.

Good thing is, for those keen to explore the interaction between food and wine, it offers an opportunity to purchase a variety of tapas and pair them with different wines. You need not purchase a whole bottle of wine; instead buy a few 'wine by glasses' and do some exploration :)

Wine Universe Wine Club

Wine Universe Wine Shop (located at 9 Raffles Boulevard, #01-107, Millenia Walk) is launching a new wine club called ‘Wine Universe Wine Club’.

This club’s first tasting is scheduled on 29 Nov (Thursday) at 7pm. The following 6 wines have been selected for the tasting (finger food will be served during this tasting as well):

The fee for tasting is $40 for non-members. For members of this wine club, the tasting fee is priced lower at $35.

Upcoming: The Vintners' Tour 2012

The Vintner's Tour is swinging by South East Asia. Singapore, Jakarta and Bali will get to savour some old world wines, interact with winemakers, check out some masterclasses and indulge in wine-paired meals between 21-28 Nov 2012.

One particular 'value for money' wine event to be held in Singapore is the Wine Treasure Hunt Challenge held on 24 Nov (Sat) at Capella Sentosa (yes, you have to cross over to the little island if you wish to partake in this event).

A whole day event, it offers more than 200 wines from 50 appellations for tasting. Tasting will be carried out at 6 wine stations located at different places. Participants have to go from one station to the next to taste as well as to get answers to fill in a questionnaire. Those with right answers get the opportunity to win prizes. First prize is a wine trip for 2 to Europe; second prize a Vintec wine fridge; third prize Schott Zwiesel decanter and fourth prize a Magnum Champagne Delamotte. Decent prizes that can be won during a day's tasting :p

This event is priced at $68; a reasonable amount for a tasting of around 200 wines. You can also attend masterclasses on the same day. There's 4 of them priced between $28 and $68. There's also wine-paired meals arranged at various eateries if you are more keen to sit, wine and dine in a relaxed atmosphere.

This is the third consumer wine event scheduled for the month of November where the event caters to a large group of wine consumers. More such events spread across a year's calendar will certainly help bring wine consumers together and give them the opportunity to explore and discover wine in informal settings with their friends. Its a great way to spend a day as well :p

Upcoming: Family of Twelve Singapore Tour

A tasting of wines from 12 NZ wineries for consumers. Its a good concept I must say when local singapore wine distributors of NZ wines come together to offer wines from different regions in NZ. It gives consumers a reason to spend more than an hour or two at a tasting (which usually happens if a local distributor showcases wine from just a particular winery alone).

I particularly like the 'Walkabout' wine tasting to be held on 3 Nov. Its from 10am to 5pm, showcasing wines from all 12 wineries and complimented with tapas. You get the opportunity to meet the folks behind these labels, interact with them, get to know their signature approach in making wine and managing respective labels. A whole day affair !

From North Island you have Kumeu River, Villa Maria, The Milton Vineyard, Craggy Range, Ata Rangi and Palliser Estate. This gives you wines from Auckland to the north to Martinborough to the south.

(Its good to see wineries from North Island being represented as in present times consumers tend to recall and gravitate more easily towards wine regions like Marlborough and Central Otago, giving the wine regions in the North Island a miss).

From South Island you get Neudorf Vineyards (Nelson), Nautilus Estate (Marlborough), Lawson's Dry Hill (Marlborough), Fromm Winery (Marlborough), Pegasus Bay (Christchurch) and Felton Road (Central Otago). Again a good spread from different regions in South Island.

If you are a fan of NZ wines, then this is a wine event tailored for your curiosity.

(If there's something I am disappointed with, it's the fact that this good event coincides with another big consumer wine event happening on the same day. It would be nice if organizers of wine events in this little island can get together and 'schedule' events thus so wine events don't occur on the same day .... wishful thinking perhaps :p ... but certainly good for wine consumers :p )

Upcoming: Singapore Wine Fiesta 2012

Eight more days to the Singapore Wine Fiesta 2012. This year its held between 2-4 Nov 2012. Like last year, the event is once again held at the Customs House (near Fullerton Bay hotel, closest mrt station being the Raffle Place station). Having attended the one held in Singapore last year, I must say I am looking forward to visit the upcoming one.

The event last year showcased old and new world wines, provided wine enthusiasts an opportunity to interact with wine producers and had a casual, fun-filled atmosphere about it. The early part of each day was quieter and less crowded. If you are a wine student or enthusiast keen to interact with wine producers and ask questions on wine, terroir and the wine making process, then I would suggest you come a little early.

The late afternoons and evenings tend to take on a more upbeat atmosphere :p Lots of crowd, little room to move around, winemakers busy and folks drinking merrily in the company of friends (then again, its a 'fiesta' right ? :p

For the upcoming event, you get the opportunity to taste around 200 labels; that's a pretty good number :) Tickets are going at $38 for each day's tasting and I hear there are some promotions on tickets offered to members of The Straits Wine Company and DBS/POSB cardholders as well. For wine consumers, this is an event worth attending :)

Magnum Wine Fair on 7 Jan 2012

Ever been to Magnum’s wine fair before? I attended the one held in 2010. It showcased quite a good range of wines from several countries, made from different varietals and at an attractive price range. This Saturday (7 Jan) Magnum is holding another wine fair. Its held at 32 Kallang Place, from 12pm to 7pm. Wines from at least 8 countries will be sold during this fair. One good aspect of this fair is that consumers get the opportunity to sample these wines before deciding on their purchases. If you are the type of consumer who like to purchase that which pleases your palate (rather than primarily be swayed by labels), this fair should be of interest to you.

It also gives you the opportunity to stock up for the Chinese New Year celebration (which is just around the corner). Swing by Kallang if you can spare some time this weekend :)

Two 'Wine Fiestas' in town on 29 Oct 2011

First I hear about the 'Wine Fiesta' which will be organized by Straits Wine Company between 28th to 30th Oct this year at Customs House. (More info about it in an earlier entry).

Now I hear of another 'Wine Fiesta' to be held on 29 Oct 2011 by Wine for Asia 2011. This one is scheduled to be held at Suntec Singapore Hall 401 between 11am and 9pm. The normal admission ticket is $10 (though there are 500 'premium tickets' retailed at $30 as well). For more info regarding this event check out : www.winefiesta.com.sg.

I was at a wine dinner a few days ago when it dawned on diners that there are 2 wine events (both for the public) to be held on the same date with the same name. It would have been less confusing if these events carried different names :)

When you and your friends are planning to go for Wine Fiesta this year, just make sure you get the event details right :p
